This has been a tough month for model building. The proximity to the Winter Solstice is taking its toll on me. The shorter days, combined with the sun’s inability to provide Vitamin-D, means that most nights I am ready to crash not long after I put my kids to bed. I can wake up, feel great, have a good day at work, and still find myself passed out on the couch by 8:30.
Suffice to say that this is not an environment that’s conducive to building models. If I’m low on physical or mental energy, I might still sit down to watch a show or play a game, but I’m probably not going to touch a model. I’ll be too likely to make a mistake, or I might not be able to sit and build for longer than an hour before I’m ready for bed. I don’t necessarily need to work in marathon 4 hour sessions every night, but I like to be able to sit down and work long enough to feel like I made some actual progress.
What’s more, I don’t even have the motivation and energy to write build posts. I have myself to blame for this, at least partially. Build posts would be so much easier to write if I didn’t insist on going into such excruciating detail. But I’ve established a precedent, and I’m not ready to give up on it yet.
I’m not worried that this is going to become a trend. I have a huge backlog of kits to build, and I am excited for all of them. This is simply the time of year when the Northern Hemisphere feels the most sluggish, and the added stress of the holidays (and my recent job change) certainly aren’t helping either. If January 2021 is anything to go by, I’ll be back in the swing of things before long.
Now having said all that, I do actually have a finished model kit. I built it almost immediately after finishing the Real Grade Nu Gundam, over the span of just a few short build sessions. It’s complete, and I have at least some photos. I just haven’t finished writing the build posts, nor have I taken any post-build photos of the articulation or posing.
Once again, this boils down to a lack of energy. But it also has to do with the fact that, in a rare occurrence, I built a mobile suit from a show I haven’t watched yet. Or rather, in this case, it’s a show I’m currently working through. But I haven’t yet gotten to the episode where this particular mobile suit appears, and I’m not in the mood to pop in the Volume 2 DVDs to trawl for screenshots or footage of the mecha action (and I need at least a few images for the intro post).
I am going to try very hard to push through this hurdle and get it posted by the end of the year, but I can’t make any promises.
In the meantime, I will post about one other build, but it’s not my build, and as a result it will be all that detailed. My three year old wanted to buy a “Gingum” with some money she got for Christmas, and she found herself a kit that her Dada is going to have to build for her. For now, all I will say is that it is a High Grade, but it is not from Gundam. Stay tuned.
