Here is my second birthday present. My wife found these on Amazon:
The product listing simply refers to them as “Gundam Logo Display”. I did a little bit of digging on them, and it left me more confused than before. They are being sold on Amazon (via an official Bandai store), as well as a few other hobby stores, but they’re also up for preorder on the official Premium Bandai site. Wait … preorder? Premium Bandai? What’s going on with that? Most P-Bandai merch isn’t available through other channels.
There are additional displays from other Gundam shows, but I’m not entirely sure where they are or aren’t being sold, or whether they are or aren’t available yet. It’s like they’re made of quantum material - they both exist and don’t exist at the same time.
Anyway, there isn’t too much more to say about these displays. I believe they are made out plexiglass, so they look like glass without being fragile. They can certainly stand alone, but they are intended for use alongside your model kits:
As you can see, they are the perfect size for both SD and 1/144th scale models (though I suppose they’d work for 1/100th scale if you place them by its feet). And while they may not be Action Bases, they can be used to prop up your mobile suit during certain poses:
They may not be a building or a launch bay diorama, but these displays still add something to the scene when combined with the right pose. I suppose it helps to have something for the model to play off of/contrast with:
I hope they continue to make more of these for other, more obscure Gundam shows. In the meantime, I now feel compelled to get some more kits from Gundam Unicorn to pose with my new display.
