Gunpla Build - High Grade Saturnix Gundam (Photos)

Let’s take a look at how the Saturn Armor turned out. Right off the bad, we run into an issue. I’ll let Vizzini here explain:

For reasons I don’t understand, the plastics Bandai tend to use for orange mobile suits almost never look as bright and punchy as that same armor looks on screen. The result is that a lot of these kinds of models end up looking like a big hunk of cheese. Sadly the Saturn Armor is no different.

Yup, that a cheese boi right there. And that’s not the only problem. In addition to being a cheese boi, and having all the same basic design flaws as the Uranus Armor, we also have the fact that it’s main weapon is both too long and structurally unsound. You can see it tilting forward here - and keep in mind that it looked even worse before I tried to adjust it:

I tried adjusting it by plugging the drill half of the weapon into the Support Mecha, instead of the claw half. It looks a little better that way, since the weapon isn’t sticking forward as much, but it doesn’t stop it from sagging:

I hate to say it, but I think this may be a case where Sunrise came up with a gimmick(s) that’s a lot harder to implement in real life than it is to animate. This Support Mecha just doesn’t look that good from any angle.

PS - Out of curiosity, I took a shot from the front, so I could compare it to the “bird pose” I found in the show. Sure enough, they look nothing alike:

This is like one of those “We have X at home” memes come to life.

Saturnix Gundam

Spoiler alert - this didn’t go well.

From a purely visual standpoint, not only does it still look like a block of cheese, but those “devil horns” on its head look ridiculous (I swear they actually looked cool in the show!).

But the other problem is that the weapons are a liability. You can put them on the shoulders, where you can then further flip them forward or backward:

Pictured - flipping them forward AND backward

But they just look too large relative to the body, like they’re just hanging there.

A better look is to strap them to the backs of the shoulders:

Or take off the Core Defenser and strap them onto the backpack:

But then they’re not in an attack position.

Speaking of which, good luck getting them into attack position. I may be outing myself as a superbly dense individual here, but you can’t really put the weapons in each hand, otherwise they’ll just flop around:

You can also combine the weapons and get them into this one handed pose, but it’s still highly unbalanced. I might have had better luck if I used one of the mounting pegs to secure it to the wrist, but I didn’t think of that at the time, so I was unable to get this into an attack pose.

Finally, you can also hold this weapon in two hands, but the connection between the two halves is pitifully loose, as were the connections between the hands and the arm, and the arms to the shoulders. Basically, everything kept falling apart. If it were a kit I cared more about, I’d have tried to tighten up the joints, but instead I just gave up.

Conclusion

There is no question in my mind that this is the worst of the Planet Armors, and I can’t see any of the others taking that title. The way it looks, the weapons it uses, everything about it feels like a misstep. I’m just going to put it past me and move on to the (for now) final armor.
